Ampthill & District RFC

14 - 34

(HT 14-5)

Aylesbury RFC

The squad made the trip to Ampthill knowing they were in for a battle against a strong opponent.

The game got underway and the first big hits set the tone for the game with both sides putting in crunching tackles. The game was being played in the Ampthill half but penalties and handling errors kept starving the As women of the ball.

Great running lines and pace saw the home side on the score board first before repeated pressure eventually saw hooker Aisha crash across. Ampthill kept firing back at the tired defence and were rewarded with another great try putting them ahead at the break.

The half time talk lit a fire under the Aylesbury women who came to life and started moving the ball through the phases, seeing wing Rhys bursting over the line. Gabi on the opposite wing was soon let loose too, breaking a last ditch tackle to go in under the sticks for Aisha to add the extras.

With the flow now back, prop Darcey crossed after running further than any front row player ever should for a score, shrugging off tackles and doing it all herself despite an eager back line running in support! The forwards seemed to like the running as flank Lena pounced on loose ball in the wide channel and showed a clean pair of heels to the defence before a true act of team spirit saw her pop the ball on the line for supporting wing Rhys to cross for her second. This selfless act was rewarded with a “proper” forwards try for Lena, crashing over from a ruck to end the game 14-34 and another win for the Aylesbury women.

The Ampthill ladies showed why they are called Lionesses, never letting up and bringing a whole new level of physicality.

Forward of the Match went to Beth on her first start in only her third game, matching the physicality of Ampthill and having a tackle count in the thousands it seemed!

Back of the Match went to Sarah H, stepping up to the physical challenge and offering running options in the back line with her positioning and passing.
