The much anticipated battle with Kilburn certainly lived up to expectations with a powerful display of women’s rugby.
The visitors got off to a strong start, with powerful runners testing the Aylesbury defence and forcing their way down to the home 22. The As women stepped up to the challenge, putting pressure on the Kilburn attack and driving them back and forcing the turnover. The Aylesbury attack soon found their flow and were attacking the Kilburn line before who else but the try scoring machine Lucy burst over the line from the base of a ruck to open the scoring.
The forwards and backs combined seamlessly and were soon back in the visitors 22 with the forwards threatening before a well worked back line move saw Sarah diving over the line and centre partner Bex adding the extras from the tee. Kilburn didn’t take it laying down and a fantastic line saw their centre burst through and score untouched to close out the half 12-5.
The pace of the game started to take its toll on Kilburn but the women in magenta and black were reaping the rewards of their intense fitness training, wearing the defence down with relentless line speed. Wing Ava, on her senior debut and eventual POTM performance, was running unchecked in the wide channels, forcing valiant defensive efforts from Kilburn. Every time she made a break, she seemed to release a runner onto the score board with trys from Emily, Jo and Johanna coming in the second half from Ava’s line breaks.
Kilburn looked like they may have got the last laugh with uncharacteristic ill discipline from Aylesbury allowing the visitors to get close to the home try line with a series of penalties but huge tackles and Toni getting under the ball closed the game out with the final score 27-5.
One of the strongest ever team performances from the Aylesbury Women as they go from strength to strength. Massive thanks to Kilburn for a challenging match and putting on a fantastic display of rugby for the crowd.
